Very nicely done, Deborah. I love the peony, too. They have such an incredible scent.

Thank you so much C.J. ! After so much lamenting, there is always the thoughts of goodness and blessings. This is my last year of babysitting a grandchild. She came into the world after my dad passed, named for his mum, Violet, who passed at 42 yrs old and my mum, Beryl. Oh and this is one of my mum's roses! However, it does have a peony look - it's so pretty! ox

You have an interesting family history, Deborah. I love hearing stories like that. Thank you!

Vi rises with a dimpled smile

And dances in her nightdress

I tell her that "I like your style"

She says "I am a Princess*.

I love you mom! You are most definitely the poet! Violet loves her Disney princess jammies! and her daddy calls her "princess," but she is kind, sensitive and oh so loving. What a treasure to receive after dad passed away and to be named after you and dad's mum. ox

Beautiful words...heartfelt meaning in them; recognizable by so many who connect with, and through, beautiful words. :) God bless

Thank you so much Jules! I hadn't written much poetry since high school, until I came to Substack. I have several flow pieces in here. I find it to be a fun challenge when the spirit moves me. I try to go from beginning to end without changing anything. It's really fun when you're "feeling it." I will run to the computer and just begin. You should try it!!

Oh thank you for this Carly! I hope so. She has been a light in what has felt really compromising and dark at times. I need to catchup with you and your writing! I am subscribed to way too many Substacks <insert face slap emoji>. ha ha!

Yesss! Perry, what a treasure for a name! Mum and I were sobbing when she came into the world, because we had lost dad on New Years Day 2021 and Violet Beryl was born a few months later in March. We had no idea she would have dad's mum's name and my mum's name. Dad's mum, Violet, passed away at the age of 42 :( My mum never had a middle name. It was such a surprise! If only dad could have met her. With every life lost, there is a birth. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I hope you're keeping well. ox

Thank you Kimberly! I love the flow feeling that stops me in my tracks. Always so much more going on in my head than I express, yet it's there between the lines. I think you can see that and it means so much to me. ox

Thank you so much Trudi! I meant to say that her mommy took that! We adore that little profile! I had to find just the right feeling for the poem :). As I told Perry, above, her name has a ton of meaning. A treasure :) ox

What a sweetheart. You captured so much, brings her to life for those who don’t know her xx

Thank you friend :) She is a treasure at that. What was taken was given, in her, and her name. So much deeper than I can explain. I told Perry, above, how she got her name. At the same time we were missing our oldest and his children. A lot of crying when this one was born and still I sit back, marvel, looking, as if it was a movie, some sadness, happiness, all at the same time. I'm still digesting it all. I know you understand. ox

Bless you. Growing up, my mum’s best friend was called Beryl and it’s always been special to me for that reason. She was like an Auntie really.

I love that. It's still quite rare, or at least here? Funny though, our old home was near a great big park called Beryl Park, named after the street it was on! We've never met another Beryl though since living in America! Is it more common in England?

Expand full comment

Well there’s the artist Beryl Cook, the actress Beryl Reid…. I can’t think of any others off the top of my head . It’s not as common as say my mum’s name of that era (which is Linda) but most people have heard of it I think.
