I LOVE this piece! Makes me think of Martin Brodsky's recent piece about 'simplicity being on the other side of complexity!' For one brief moment I was living with my head outside that VW bus, wind blowing through my hair with the smell of salt water in my lungs. Ahhhh...simplicity!

Yes happier times .l love the sea and we travelled by train to the beach. My times in the seventies were Bob Marley and Bob Dylan.l love nature and l need to be near it always. Its a great time when our children are happy and life is good. Our Children grow ,and their children grow. My children are good human beings not perfect and loved by myself and God.🙏🕊️♥️.

Deborah, I just wanted to tell you that your post on the VW bus was one of the best things I've ever read on Substack, bar none - and I read a lot. It was just full of goodness. I'm a little older but not so much so that the feeling of times past was much the same as I remember. All the best you and yours. It's so obvious to me that you have a good heart and kind soul. Sincerely - Jim

Thank you Jim! This means the world to me! Those days, the music, etc., were truly a treasure. The sense of freedom, less information, no digital control (just t.v. which was not an obsession), etc. was bliss in reflection.

All the best to you too. Always. ox

Nothing like the pull of a bus. John and l had a blue 1978 VW camper in the mid 90s and l currently have a green 2008 T5, VW camper. Not quite the character of the older ones, though l still love her. 😊💚🙏

Love this so much… the fun, the joy, the California smell of Juniper and Santa Ana wind… and yes, the lobster from Puerto Nuevo. Beautiful couple and those kids in an orange van.

Oh my friend! Yesss! the Juniper and Santa Anas! I’m thinking you know Puerto Nuevo too! What on earth were we thinking! Free to be. I have loved looking through Joel Salatin’s blog (The Lunatic Farmer) and this quote: “Deep down, very few of us want safety to suffocate freedom.”

The magical orange bus was the best of times in a world void of Satan’s technical chaos and bureaucrat worship.

Love you Jacqui and thank you. oxox

I’m not sure how I missed out reading this lovely touching piece Deborah! I was a VW bug girl too, and that was our first car followed by a VW which had until we outgrew it and needed a larger win. We were blessed to have grown up during those wonderful golden years! Nothing complicated our lives, and found joy scrapping together change from bottles to afford something extra at the grocery store. I would love to read your story as a novel. ✨🤗💖

Oh Charlotte, I am so excited you loved this! They were the best of days! I think writing has shown us how we developed our sense of freedom and love of life - like you said, so uncomplicated and real. It built strong minds, humility, and a real sense of what is important. And I’d LOVE to write this story and these stories! I think you have quite the book too!

I’ve got to tell you I tried to dive into a book making project with my poetry and just about had heart failure! It brought me back to all the programs and things I had to keep up with for years in photography and how I had all this energy, even at an older age, to push through the language, creative systems, and frustration of it all — so there I thought Blurb or Amazon book making would be easy and my brain completely zoned out - which isn’t me normally with this stuff! I think I’ve ran out of energy for all the nonsense - I used to make Blurb books for my office to show my work, while using other professional software for wedding, portrait albums, etc. for clients…, and run a household of three busy kids and a husband who worked 70 hours a week! Plus go out and shoot jobs several times a week! I am determined though - but for now need to put it aside and lift some weights before I try again (lol).

Thank you again for reading this and sharing! Love you! oxox
