Welp... I'm almost 68 and 7/12ths. I am a little bit shy and a little bit crazy and I do what I want to even when one particular person in my life always tells me it will never work, but 90% of the time, I make it work. (Most of those things have to do with some nutty art project) A friend once told me that I'm a cross between Little Lost Girl and Attila the Hun, and I took it as a compliment. Funny thing though, I have always been like that. I scare myself sometimes. Life is good when you can grow up a little bit at a time and see that twisting, winding, sometimes circling and sometimes reversing trail of lessons along the way. Lessons learned and relearned and still waiting to be learned because of my "stubborn streak" that dad always accused me of having. I think we are doing something good, Deb! I really think we are. I think you're a shining example of what a girl, woman, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, sister, can do and can be. :) Many blessings are to come and you'll see them all even after you have had "...the terrible, no good very bad..." week.
Jenni! Sounds like you will leave a lot of cool stories that will give your grandchildren much sentiment and laughter! I hope we both leave some laughter and tears behind for our families! I also think we learn our whole lives. I'm very independent too and have an introvert/extrovert personality. Oh boy. I think we're doing something good too! It might not always feel like it but keeping going is the first thing right? Thank you so much for your kindness and for inspiring me to keep going. I was a bit down today - but that happens - and then you showed up! God Bless you Jenni. oxox
EEK! I’m 70! I have always felt young because in entertainment nobody seems to get old. You can do what you do in to your 90s or 100s until you decide to quit. But when I take photos I am reminded! Lol! Stay beautiful and magical Deborah!
Charlotte, perception from the young, including when we were young, in terms of our parents, is so interesting! It's so strange but my friends and I were saying that our parents looked older when they were younger? Like "pre-having us?" Maybe it was the hair styles and old fashioned clothes? Then in the 70's my mom looked sooo young and kept looking younger? I looked old too and then as my hair got longer I looked young? ha ha! (or at least I thought so in pictures). You're so right about the industry! People stay very young in entertainment and perhaps that's a combo of doing what you love... and nowadays, especially, there is "a lot" of beautification going on! I am continually reminded in pictures that I do not have that wonderful smooth skin of the young! and recently have been shopping for "quarter length sleeve" tshirts! ha ha! It's all good! I think you and I are aging gracefully! You stay lovely Charlotte and thank you for this! I hope you had a good business trip! Have a peaceful week. oxox
We used to take trips to Amsterdam for a day or two, more than 30 years ago.
Driving home high as kites, the slowest car on the highway, going 50km/h below the limit, having the time of our lives, thinking nobody would notice even though people were waving and laughing at us ...
One day, not sure who said it, said: "one day we will be driving like this without being high".
There was a long silence, then: "would that be full circle"? And the laughing continued.
Thank you for writing!
It brought back memories of my Nana.. she was a great lady and it is good to be reminded!
An! That is hilarious! thank God you're here today to talk about it! I can hear the roar of laughter :) I just had to find the humour in life right now! We all need it and my sweet nana was an absolute gem. My mom left a bit more here in comment :) (Beryl) - I wish I could have many more days with my nana. Thank you for leaving me this comment and I'm so glad it brought you memories of your nana. Have a great week. ox
I miss our generation and those days. Guess that's what we're here to do. I don't like seeing so much hate, casual detachment and unhappiness in the young. Or emptiness.
I'd give anything to go back and sit with them and ask more questions. ox
Yesss! Completely agree! We have a young man working/training to be an electrician (not many out there that want to). He is so cool and has great friends. Young active, sweet hard working kids. We just don't get that visual on our screens. That is "by design" to make us lose hope!
When Nana came to America at 56 years old she took a job in the notions department of a big fancy store. Nana rode there on her bicycle and parked it underground among the Cadillacs. She knew everything about knitting and sewing. Customers always asked for the little British lady and some were even movie stars, that's why she always had her little autograph book with her ❤
Dear Mom, how many "nanaisms" can we remember! There were so many. I love this memory (rolling with laughter!) and I remember how proud she was working in the Notions Department at Bullocks, right? We would go visit her and I can still see it, just like in the picture of us. Wish I had a picture I could find with her when I was a teenager. I am so blessed to have her autograph books. Talk about some amazing artwork in the early ones from the 20's 30's - I'll have to get them out. Love you mom. oxox
Awe, Elliot! No, not me! Nevvvva!!! Not getting old! I often say to myself, "why don't I just sit down like all the other nanas, grandmas, omas, etc., and eat biscuits and chat and find out what my grown children are up to - but I learned a long time ago that children are the best people to hang out with. Not only are they so funny, raw and loving - they keep me young :). Maybe that's wise? :). Thank you. ox
Nana was such a gem. Whenever I think of her the first thing that comes to mind was her little swooshing whistle. It was like the engine of her mind, lol. Loved these classic memories & I do hope your toe feels better. Yes, rugs have a mind of their own. So glad you have little Violet to keep your old in check. She's an angel. Nothing like a good "noise cheen" for an amazing sleep, lol!
Gem is an understatement! I loved that swoosh swoosh busy sound of our nana. "The engine of her mind" so good! I'll always remember she had Cadbury bars waiting for us when we visited. And grape jello (which you loved and I didn't! ha ha!). Somehow after taking the toenail off, and receiving medical treatment from a three year old (magical Disney bandages - that are still on btw!) I did the normal dancing with all the kids at the park concert Friday night - then completely collapsed in usual bone pain fashion. So worth it. The Noise Cheen Queen! I told her to tell mommy and daddy to play her classical music instead. ha ha! She'll probably remember :). Not amazing nana. not amazing. lol. You will have so much fun with them :). Love you brother. ox
Loved those stories about your nana, Deborah. Great memories for you. When I was a kid it seemed like all “old people” had budgies. Doesn’t seem to be a thing anymore…..now they all have iPads.
Mark! My mom, Beryl, left another classic in a comment here! ha ha! It's so funny about the budgies! You're right! Louise had a few! So weird to go from birds to iPads! Poor old people! We need to reject all this stuff! I still love the birds and the garden and that will never change. And btw, I'm not old. What am I saying here? ha ha! Hope you have a good week and thank you for reading and commenting. ox
Thank you for sharing these memories of your nana, I was chuckling throughout. Her and Louise sound like a real fierce duo and ladies I could laugh with.
Kathleen! ha ha! I laugh so hard thinking about these things! We certainly need us to grow old and become silly (or however we're perceived!) - I smile and I have tears all at the same time. She was a gem. Keeps me grounded in what life is about. My nana, and my mom went through a lot, nana through two world wars in England and mom and her alone in the Blitz. She loved America and embraced it and moved forward always, despite so much heartache, loss and challenge. She was very brave. That brings me many tears. Thank you for reading and commenting. ox
What fun memories…”we took the slow lane”! made me laugh out loud! My kids say the day I take it slow… my car keys are gone! Your hilarious comparing of ages makes me remember too… how my grandparents seemed old when they were probably only 50 something. My parents were fun and fit and always going off with friends or late night card games… I remember thinking they were old but stil having fun. That’s what I’ve got from them I think. You are lucky to have young grandkids... keeps you young and busy for sure! And so much joy being around them! 😊This was a great read down memory lane, love your humor and how you blend yourself in at the moment! Great writing as always, sweet Deb! 😊🩷
Nooooo Joan! No threats! But I know us kids are looking out for our parents "kindly." My mama isn't seeing well and really misses driving. The whole age thing is really interesting with the young's perception of what "old "is. My parents were the same! They loved to go out and dance in L.A. with the Brits! Loved seeing them dress up and date :). I am blessed to hang out with the littles whenever they're available and of course I babysit the youngest "reminder mermaid!" ha ha - I don't sit down much but I notice most grandmas do? Enjoy your week friend. ox
I’ve noticed she comments each post and you’ve called her mom! Your personal cheerleader! 😅 love her comment about nana riding her bike, parking amongst Cadillacs… my kind of woman! 😅
Love she follows you and adds her two cents now and then. 🩷
.... and we have a conversation every other day about how she's straining her eyes! Oh my :{ You nailed it. Mom has been my best friend and cheerleader my whole life and a brilliant writer. Dear Mary, I am so sorry you didn't experience a nana to connect with. I was so blessed that out of leaving everyone behind in England, my brave nana decided to make the journey on her own 6 months later. I have much gratitude as I have always lamented not having my extended family near my whole life. Aging can be frustrating but humour always helps! Keep going I say and definitely keep the hope alive and be the best for all the young around you :). Thank you so much for reading this! I need a laugh :). Have a great week. ox
My sweet friend I loved your Nana and Louise stories. Slow in second gear has me laughing so hard I was crying and Kyn couldn't figure out why and I could not stop to explain. Wonderful stories of the past, which I do think were far better times than today in so many ways. I am 66 and would not want to be young today. I say this sincerely.

I do have to say there was something so special about growing up in the 60's/70's, the timeless music, people seemed to have more manners? but we were free and had fun. As a young British immigrant, I lived in a mixed race neighborhood and it was an average to low income and no one was mad at each other. Everyone was a friend. I rode my bike up and down the block every single day and waved and they waved back.
Thank you for reading and commenting!! I needed a good laugh! Those budgies are a hearty little bunch. I imagine in the wild they get into way too many "people things." :{ Have a great week Perry. oxox
Thank you so much Ayesha! I did the counter serious post you suggested! God was so good to gift me with an "old lady week" so I could remember all of those fun stories of my nana. There are many more too! ha ha! and grandchildren are what keep us young! (or old, depending how the week goes I guess lol). Happy Sunday to you. oxox
I love the stories about Nana and Louise! The drunk bird!! Oh my, what a gem ❤️. Your family stories are always so rich with love and laughter. I turned 40 last year and it seems to be the point where things start that downward spiral, and I remember my parents turning 40 and thinking how ancient they were. Aging and perception are funny things. Your vibrancy and joy for life are contagious, thank you for these lovely stories.
Jenn! oh my goodness I needed to remember these days and it was such a gift after my crazy week. They were truly the sweetest. I have a little 4x6 oil painting of a yellow rose Louise gave me and treasure it. It's true about 40. We do begin to feel old then! Sorry! ha ha! You're so young though. It's weird how we look at our parents and grandparents as ancient. Also, when I look back on their pictures in the 50's, 60's they had really old fashioned hair-dos and just looked older than they did in the 70's/80's. That's when their hair got softer and they looked younger! Reverse aging! Thank you for reading! I have been too serious in my writing lately! I needed a good laugh and thought I should share :). Much love to you and Happy Sunday! oxox
Oh, how lovely. Did Louise paint the rose? I love how art and music always seem to be weaving your life together. I love that you always write whatever is in your heart. Take care and happy Sunday! ❤️

Could not agree more! It is painful to see, I really feel sorry for the kids these days.
I believe that there will be a huge rupture in our culture and social fabric... detachment is the right word.
Yet, I see some really humble and down to earth kids who already had enough and are finding their way back to the basics.
There is always hope!
Yesss! Completely agree! We have a young man working/training to be an electrician (not many out there that want to). He is so cool and has great friends. Young active, sweet hard working kids. We just don't get that visual on our screens. That is "by design" to make us lose hope!
Fear mongering, misinformation and propaganda... it is a shame.

You're quite right in that thought—76 really is young for a life expectancy. What happened to reaching a centennial? Anyhow, nice essay on aging; your perspective is refreshing! I too think old is cool; what's not to like about having a few more good stories to tell?

Perry,
I agree! it's exhausting watching the younger generations and I feel sorry for them. So much of this is not their fault. The world, it's economies, powers that be, the addiction to tech, leading to isolation, so many factors - it's not an easy world. But then? was it ever for the young. It's about growing through it all and coming out the other side. Isn't history constantly repeating itself and wrapped up in different packages?
I do have to say there was something so special about growing up in the 60's/70's, the timeless music, people seemed to have more manners? but we were free and had fun. As a young British immigrant, I lived in a mixed race neighborhood and it was an average to low income and no one was mad at each other. Everyone was a friend. I rode my bike up and down the block every single day and waved and they waved back.
Thank you for reading and commenting!! I needed a good laugh! Those budgies are a hearty little bunch. I imagine in the wild they get into way too many "people things." :{ Have a great week Perry. oxox
Nanas are the best.
They are Rainey!! Thank you for reading! I needed a good laugh :) after my silly, exhausting week! Happy Sunday to you! oxox
This is so heartwarming. Sounds like you had a busy week! Grandkids are the best.
