Truly lovely Deb, especially the color 😉. But seriously, thank you for introducing me to this talented artist, and what a crazy thing to have happen in front of your parents, but sometime these sorts of mishaps have a way of bringing us together after all.

ha ha! that color! But thank you Jenn. Jaco lead a very traumatic decline but has become a historical figure in bass playing. My parents were great! And those events surely do bring us closer. Poor John :( Like so many prodigies/geniuses - it’s a tricky road, sadly. They bless the world, yet they live often tortured.

It is everywhere ✨. I’m glad his genius is getting some recognition and his talent is outliving his ignominy.

Thank you Charles! That’s so very cool you read this about Jaco and his music. Aside from his very tragic ending and his mental struggles, he inspired generations of bass players. It’s a joy to see so many young people taking Jaco’s talent to other levels. It honors his purpose here on earth. Hope this finds you doing well. ox

From the time we met at 16, your Dad was a staunch Jazz fan & I wish he could have read this article. He would have definitely loved this memory. ❤

Yes! Dad was such a cool guy when it came to music. To this day I miss not being able to talk music with him or receive a new YouTube song in my email. He would have laughed out loud about this memory. Love you mom. We miss him so bad. oxox

Jaco's Bio was very sad when you think of the genius he was.

Enjoyed this read :)

Very :( — which actually goes hand-in-hand, often, with genius. It’s good to see so many young bass players taking his talent to other levels. It honors him. Thank you and love you brother. ox

Wow, Deborah! Your reflections on the Jaco Pastorius legacy and the connection through jazz in your journey with your husband are truly moving. 🎶 It’s a beautiful tribute to both the genius of Jaco and the love you two share. (I’ll be honest with you, this is the first time I have heard of Jaco.😬) Like many artists it seems like he wasn’t able to balance his on-stage personality with his off-stage self. I am intrigued and glad to spend some of my day listening to his work.

Your insights on the new generation of musicians channeling Jaco’s spirit shows how his influence transcends time, making jazz and funk ever-evolving. Poor John, I can understand why he would be speechless for a few days. But he discovered his future in-laws were loving and empathetic people. I think the experience only strengthened your relationship. This was wonderful, thank you!

Thank you SOOOO MUCH for this! I love how you love discovering talent! When Jaco played with Joni it was so much fun! I love getting a fill of his bass playing around the house. Definitely funk, fusion -- which leads to other discoveries like one of our favorites, Marcus Miller. A great man and talent. We've seen him several times and I got to photograph Marcus at Lincoln Center in New York. He has a great bio. Jaco lives on in so many young bass players and it's so good to see as it kinda wipes away the extreme sadness of his mental demise. My dad loved John like a son to the end and John really craved that. We miss his emails full of new music and the way he loved to play it as soon as we were visiting together. You're right, that moment did strengthen our relationship and John's with my parents. They adored him from day one (even though, the first time at their house, he spilled all the bbq chicken dad was making outside, tripping over the slider door bar and presenting it all over the kitchen floor for mom and I ! ha ha ha! Mom laughed her pants off and so did dad! We all did! If only you knew what a perfectionist both John and dad are/were. It's why they got along! Except my John was far more wild when it came to being organized. Dad was very plan oriented (like me) and John just winged everything. But they had a creative perfection. I know you relate. Love you and thank you again. I am spending these next few days catching up with some reading here!! oxox

This is what I thought of when you mentioned your husband being nervous about introducing you to Jaco. :) I remember my brother Paul talking about Jaco Pastorius as he took up the bass.
