"When I stand near a horse, I instantly feel a sense of awe and respect. The best of me comes out."

I agree! Horses are so elegant and full of beauty.

Loved reading this. We have always been mindful of animals in need and I don't think ever lived without one and mostly a rescue.

Hi Bill,

Wrote you back on the recent "Sunday Amen." Would love to get your email 🥰. It's been a doozy of a last three years for sure. The fire, the surgery were only an awakening to a lot of underlying grief. But that's how life is. We wake up. Your story is CRAZY!!!! and I would have been like Nancy! then... oh boy!!!!! 🙃🙏🏻

Dear Deb

I walked into this post afterr coming home from a supper out. Girl i feel so heartbroken about what you and your parents went through. My nephews in-law lost their house in one of the fires so your parents and they must live in the northern part of CA. Hon there will always be cruelty and evilness in the world. More than anyone can or should have to imagine. You cannot change the world. No one expects you to. You can only change yourself. I sent you information about where to find the Prayer of St. Francis. It is a beautiful prayer that stars out ; Lord pleaae make me the insturment of thy mercy" and cgoes on from there. i have tried to live by the words of that . I'm not perfect butt there arre times that i have gone out of my way to help people. i will tell you about one of them since i tinvolves animals

After Nancy and I were married I moved into an old 18th century home about 40 milles from my hometown. My sister was still liing in california and mom was in a nursing home so i went home to see my Dad and cook him some food for the week. i promisd Nancy that I would be home for supper since it was Sunday and she was planning a big dinner. As I was on my way home Isaw a farmer harvesting his corn way out in a field. But my eye caugth something else, s flame and a wisp of smokk emanating from his huge cattle barn. I pulled into the driveway , knocked on the door of the house, and tolld the lady who answered to call the fire department because the barn was on fire. She cried out "Oh my God, that'sour calving barn, we have calves in there!" So I immediately ran to the bern and opened the door. Huge ballls of smoke billowed out of the barn when I did that comletely masking a frightened calf that hit me square in the chest knocking me to the ground. By the time I got up other people had arrived and were saving the calves so I went into the barn to try to reove the tractors. he frst thing I saw was that the farmer had his own gas pump like a service station would have and i had some second thoughts about staying but I though t if i could start a tractor I could drive it through the wooden wall. just then something hit me on the back and I looked up to see the sky. Part of the roof had burned away and I could see that the rest of the barn would come down soon. I just was out of the barn a minute or two before it collapsed. So rather than stay, I remrember ed my proise to Nancy and headed home as i was already a half hour late.

Well if I thought the barn fire was a hellish experience, it was nothing to the one I got when i walked in the door late for supper.

Where the hell have you been? I ca;lled your fatherr a half hour ago andhe said you were on your wat home. What di you do,stop off at a bar or something?

No, I was in a fire.

If you watch "All Creatures Great & Small" as we do, you can get the sense of how the man who wrote it wants to teach us about animals. Just as in this quote by him...

“If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans.”

— James Herriot

Great read & wonderful to experience that love with you at the farm ❤🐎🐱
