Ode to the Artful Youth

a photo-video essay

Tell their stories by discovering their heart.

There is nothing like working with sentient, artistic youth. These are just a few of the most exciting young clients, I worked with, in the last ten years — all grown up now and living full lives. I chose them due to the street environment and thought it would make a fun video.

Los Angeles holds a certain magic for story telling without words. From passionate music lover and “truth seeker” (that wall, like everything else, was not planned) torn between executive and indy film maker — to an endearing, artsy young woman telling me (as we walked around) she was going to shave her head for St. Baldrick’s Foundation the following week — and I literally just covered a teenager going through cancer, for St. Baldricks, at UCLA’s Pediatric Cancer Center, only a few days prior. Sooooo I proposed going back to L.A. to the same spot, same outfit, after she shaved her head. It was very cool and I learned a little about how strangers approach a bald person { and I don’t think there are any coincidences in life } Then there’s the artist who started his passion at an open market, (at around 15) painting “live” for shoppers. I asked his mom if his room was painted? and.., if so, could we maybe? So we started there, before driving out to L.A. with some of his work — which I called and asked him to bring last minute. Everything always came together like that. I’d meditate on the incredibly rich words these kids would pen on their questionnaire. Ending with a talented, artsy and most stylish girl, who wanted nothing more than to shoot in the Art District. She recently got married and is helping her mom run an animal sanctuary. The one with the incredible hair :)

I love the artful youth. I see them.

Cheers to the weekend :)

Turn up the music: “Full Circle” by Canadian Band, Half Moon Run

BTW: I don’t use A.I. to create anything (don’t plan on using ChatGPT, either, anytime soon). My only social apps are Notes, here, and Instagram. All videos/films are painstakingly “manually” put together with intention and attention to details and timing :) I’m having fun exploring and learning.
