...let my offering soar

My nightstand

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

There is always so much growing up to do. Seasons where you believe you know it all. Seasons where you knew nothing at all. It has dawned on me a thousand times that we can begin anywhere. For some reason though, a cord has been struck. My mind has wandered to a word. Is it the word I was looking for all along? Or is it a guilty word chased by patience. If you find yourself in a season where your soul yearns to create then you must fight for it patiently.

Can I surrender
to the splendor
around my feet
where colors meet
in fantasies of flight
gathering all my might
That I might leave
my heart to grieve
the feathers lost
in my mind's frost
So cold I withered
wandered and dithered
Call me back to You
unselfishly anew
Let my offering soar
as momentum pours
For the journey is dark
in the light I embark
And the good fight is there
in the tears of the air.
