I recently read a long BBC story about the Queen and her corgis.
Royal author Penny Junor writes in her book “All The Queen's Corgis,” that “the Queen, essentially a very shy woman, who's required to talk confidently to strangers, uses the dogs to reduce her discomfort.”
The Queen believes that they not only reduce discomfort and anxiety but they are a leveler. Corgis attract people from all walks of life. There has never been an evening walk with our grand-dog Jack where we don’t see someone approaching us with a big grin or a giggle. Cars slow down to smile at him. One little girl, about 8, walking with her parents, cupped her hands over her mouth and couldn’t speak. Her eyes were full of joy. We have met more people and had more conversations just because of Jack. Our other dogs have definitely been a topic of random conversations on walks.. but nothing like Jack.
I loved the story of how The Queen had a group of war veterans to a luncheon and one of them, sitting next to her, found himself unable to speak. He was suffering with PTSD. She looked at him and said, “well then, shall I help you?” She then summoned for a few of her Corgis who entered the room and ran to her under the large table. The Queen and this young man proceeded to feed them snacks and chatted together.
Below is a list of qualities that would make a Corgi a great world leader:
they’ve got the looks and a get-things-done-attitude (so that should make everyone happy)
super funny (you will laugh a lot while they sneak past a spending bill for food, water and shelter for all!)
great therapist (just being around them makes you feel good)
good snacks = staying awake, alert and on top of things!
exercise! (they consider walking a very important part of clearing their heads)
inspirational (small but mighty and believes they and you can conquer anything)
physical strength (don’t let those 4-inch legs deceive you)
built-in security (they watch over you all day)
you are never left out (pack dogs won’t leave you behind!)
work and play balance (Corgis love to work hard and play hard)
sleep is very important (they do it with abandon)
great herders of children (if that’s what you need)
honest (Corgis tell it like it is)
loving (they love love)
independent spirit (thinkers)
People will often say to us “oh I’ve always wanted a Corgi!” Corgis might be short low riders, but they are big (no pun) boss dogs. They will put small children in their place, or chase them around the house in hopes they will coral them at some point. They will do this until they are successful., which can be annoying but ‘tis their job! You must earn the respect of a Corgi and know everything you can about the breed before considering getting one. We were blessed to inherit Jack during the pandemic and Jack was blessed to be adopted at one years old by our daughter from a very special breeder. He is a purebred Welsh Pembroke and he was free. That’s another story.
There are many dogs in need of adoption in the U.S. (and the world) at present so we always encourage that first. Check out Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue in Los Angeles if you want to read about Corgis, rescue, what people do once they get themselves into a special breed like the Corgi. It’s a great resource.
To end, isn’t this what life is all about? respecting others? Respecting God’s creations and each other? If Corgis ruled the world I believe we would get along much better and achieve more together.
There. I did it! A story about Corgis..
P.S. You might get in trouble for touching a world leader’s ears, but Corgis have the softest ears to pet, the cutest waddle to watch and a morning coo that will melt your heart.
