In the agonizing illumination of hurricanes and wars I have questioned humanity on a level that I never conceived. A modern narrative, a construct if you will, of what was supposed to be for some kind of past history lesson.

The evolution of man spinning around the sun on it’s axis. A 365 day revolution of earth.

As I stared at my Bea using her natural instincts, watching a flock of seagulls gathered on the sand, I thought to myself, where have our instincts gone? What was she thinking? If she could understand the news, she might say that being set free to fight the battle of a great storm would be the best choice. She might tell you that man’s best friend took her to a fence in a deserted field, tied her up, and walked away. She would say the fear and panic were real. With no way to set herself free or use the gifts her amazing Creator gave her, she waited.

How many of us are still waiting? Tied up in some kind of virtual Kingdom, unable to resist our captors, be it their promises or conceived notions of us, they rent space in our head.

Six years later, Bea would tell you that her struggles are still very real. To be separated from us is anguish. No matter how hard we have tried it is a reminder of what happened. We are her security and love.

When we are separated from our Creator God, we are left helpless, fearful and drowning in hopelessness. Although we fear-bite and resist our rescue, we know that He is security and Love.

Bea might tell you we are her hope in a dark tunnel of past abuse. She might say that she rests well in our presence, as we rest with the One who created her for us to love.

Sunshine is Bea’s medicine. As I sit here writing this, she is soaking up a warm patch in our Airbnb in Pacifica, California…. safe from the storms, where we are waiting to visit our youngest son.

Looking through our iridescent bubble, we know life is fleeting. Transient, often sudden, from birth to dust.

As for our progression? Bea would say, it is to live free, to run and play, or do her best to survive. Untied. Unchained. We would say it is to live free in spirit. Unleashed from man. To let go and let God in all circumstances. To live fearless in the spirit of Christ. To trust that all will be okay. It is then that we will make better choices as humans for all of His creations. To respect the earth and each other. Especially for those that cannot speak for themselves.

If I had one chance to talk to the person who left their dog tied up to die, I would say “everyone will have to answer someday.
